HISTORICAL RESOURCES COORDINATING COMMITTEE

The Walla Walla Historical Resources Coordinating Committee was formed on September 12, 2002.  The initial news release stated:

Tourism is good for business, and Walla WallaValley tourism adds substantial dollars to our economy. Since our history and historical architecture are key factors in local tourism, a new Historic Resources Coordinating Committee has been formed to provide expertise in reviewing historical brochures and other draft writings, to increase the accessibility of local historical resources, and to help fill gaps in the history of our area.

The committee includes representatives of various local institutions with involvement in area history as well as local historians.  From 2002 through 2004, the committee was staffed by the Walla Walla Valley Chamber of Commerce.  Since then, staffing has been provided by Tourism Walla Walla.

Current members of the Historic Resources Coordinating Committee include James Payne, Fort Walla Walla Museum; Kathie Weingart, Walla Walla 2020 and City Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee; Daniel Clark, Walla Walla 2020 and Ft. W.W. Museum Living History Company; Larry Dodd, retired Whitman College archivist; Mary Meeker, Walla Walla 2020; Gary Mabley, City of Walla Walla Historic Preservation Review Commission; Roger Trick, Whitman Mission National Historic Site; Kirsten Schober, Kirkman House Museum, Rick Tuttle, Kirkman House Museum, Robert Stevenson, Fort Walla Walla Museum, Michael Paulus, Whitman College Archivist, Michael Davidson, Tourism Walla Walla, and Chris Erickson, Tourism Walla Walla.

Committee members see their work as a great opportunity to pool resources to make local history more accurate and accessible.

Area agencies and businesses as well as others are encouraged to contact the committee to review drafts of statements, brochures, and other writings touching on the history of the region.  For more information on committee services, contact a committee member, or Tourism Walla Walla, at info@wallawalla.org, tel.509-525-8799, 8 S.
